Annaivarakum IITM – ‘IIT Madras for All’

Annaivarakum IITM – ‘IIT Madras for All’ is the brain child of the Institute’s Director, to take IIT Madras to a larger population and make IITM quality education accessible to a more extensive section of students. Under this initiative, the Institute has launched a number of programmes.

Off-Campus BS Degrees – Taking its expertise and several years of experience in offering online education through NPTEL (https://nptel.ac.in/), IIT Madras took a step ahead and launched the world’s world’s first online BSc Degree program in Programming and Data Science (https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/) in 2020. The program allows for options to exit earlier in the foundation, diploma or BSc degree level, thus making it truly flexible.

Encouraged by the success of this program, IIT Madras launched the second, Four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Electronic Systems (https://study.iitm.ac.in/es/). The program allows one to learn from anywhere, as per convenience. Option is available to choose the number of courses per semester and the BS degree will be awarded once 142 credits are earned.
Anaivarukkum IIT Madras is a transformative initiative aimed at providing equal opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to pursue higher education in fields such as Data Science and Electronic Systems at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM). Since its inception in July 2022, Anaivarukkum IIT Madras has made significant strides in motivating and nurturing the talents of aspiring students.

Key Initiatives:

This initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaborative efforts in unlocking the potential of every aspiring student and fostering excellence in education.

Rural Technology Centres/ Rural Interaction Centres

In an endeavour to take quality education to students in rural areas, Pravartak Technologies Foundation (https://pravartak.org.in/) of IIT Madras through its partners, has embarked on establishing Rural Interaction Centres (RICs) in villages which focuses on bringing the best teachers to rural students through technology.

A village study center is established with a smart TV and internet connection. The RICs cater to students of 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. The live online classes are conducted from evening 6 pm to 8 pm. Experienced teachers teach Science, English and Maths in the mother tongue. 89 villages are covered under this program in Tamil Nadu and 100 villages in Varanasi District, Uttar Pradesh. As many as 12,000 students are taking these programs through these 189 Rural Centres.

Another keyinitiative under ‘IIT Madras for All’ is the establishment of Rural TechnologyCentres in partnership with ASHA, which takes computer science literacy toremote and rural Government School Students in Tamil Nadu. These Centres willspread the knowledge of technology and its benefits to rural areas of TamilNadu. The Rural Technology Centre offers courses to 9th to 12th standardstudents. The goal of these centres is to make the children comfortable withthe use of technology by providing both digital literacy skills andcomputational thinking skills.

Electronic kits distribution

IIT Madras has undertaken a project to connect one lakh Government School students in Tamil Nadu studying in rural locations to electronic science by providing them specially developed ‘electronics kit.’ Part of the 'Anaivarukkum IITM' (IITM for all) initiative, this outreach program on STEM aims to connect with one lakh students every year in Tamil Nadu studying in rural locations. It is intended to motivate them to take up a career in the domain of semiconductor technologies through the lectures and hands-on experience imparted to students of classes IX, X, XI, and XII.

Through this initiative, 252 government schools in rural locations were identified for getting the electronic kits developed by IIT Madras. The Institute has already trained two teachers from each school to teach the children. To support the teachers, India Literacy Project (ILP India), a non-profit organization, has come forward to deploy teachers to support them in electronics teaching and provide science kits (at least 10 kits to each of the 252 schools) through IIT Madras. The teacher volunteers from ILP will also support the teachers in conducting science kit experiments from class 6th to 10th Standard.

NPTEL

National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), is India’s largest technical knowledge dissemination and certification program involving seven Indian Institutes of Technology. NPTEL is the largest successfully running multi institutional project in India. It is a not for profit consortium supported by the MoE, Govt of India.

This initiative was started with the aim of providing access to quality courses created by faculty of premier institutes to anyone who has an internet connection and a computer. With the advent of MOOC platforms, we organically evolved to offering certification exams and has grown on to become the technical agency managing the National MOOC platform - SWAYAM.

Courses in all major branches of engineering and physical sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels along with management, and humanities courses at the postgraduate level are now available to learn from, on the NPTEL website, without any cost. Several improvements such as indexing of all courses, keyword search, transcripts in PDF format and translated text in 11 Indian languages were implemented. https://nptel.ac.in/

Highlights

NPTEL Certification Courses

From March 2014 onward NPTEL started offering online certification courses. Every January and July, anywhere between 700 to 800 courses are offered online - free of cost - for anyone to enroll and learn from. The certification involves writing an exam that is proctored and conducted in 200+ cities across India. Through an online portal, 4, 8, or 12 week online courses, typically on topics relevant to students in all years of higher education along with basic core courses in sciences and humanities with exposure to relevant tools and technologies, are being offered.

I started my NPTEL journey in 2019, and to date, I have successfully completed around 38 NPTEL courses. The most important thing to achieve via the NPTEL courses is the knowledge that is crucial as a part of life sustainability. Thank you NPTEL, for your courses.

Pragyan Bharadwaj, NPTEL Topper

Being part of NPTEL's Local Chapter improves our college’s NIRF ranking and scores in NAAC accreditation. It also helps our students to gain knowledge in the subject and thereby getting placed in the final year. Through credit transfer, students' credits have increased.

Valli SM, SPOC, Thiagarajar College, Madurai

Completing NPTEL courses can lead to better job prospects, promotions, and career advancement in diverse industries. Thank you, NPTEL, for opening doors to incredible learning and career opportunities. Your courses equipped us with valuable skills, making us competitive in the job market. The Fee waivers offer significant financial relief to students, enabling access to education for those who might otherwise be unable to afford. This support reduces the burden of tuition and related expenses, making higher education more equitable and accessible for low-income individuals, fostering diversity and promoting social mobility.
