Health & Wellbeing
- Food on Campus: Healthy and affordable food choices are made available for all on campus. The Office of the Hostel Management (OHM) takes care of the dining facilities for all students in 21 hostels of the Institute. The Committee for Monitoring General Facilities of Students (CMGFS) and Mess Monitoring and Control Committee (MMCC) are tasked with monitoring and ensuring that healthy food choices are provided in a hygienic manner in the hostel dining facilities, Food Courts, Food joints, Eateries, Cafes, etc. Students are involved in decision-making related to procuring food items, planning menu and maintaining hygiene in the kitchen and mess hall. https://www.iitm.ac.in/campus-life/campus-amenities
- MITR: MITR is body of faculties and student MITRs, who offer peer counseling and support according to the student's needs. MITRs are trained in basic counseling skill sand empathy, and are available in almost all the departments and hostels. MITR organizes Barefoot counseling training for the new MITRs in collaboration with the Wellness Centre, and also conduct surveys and events for students based on specific needs. https://dost.iitm.ac.in/iitmdost/mitr
- BE Happy: Recently launched, “Be Happy” Initiative lists the various support system available: Kushal meetings, Time-bound grievance redressal, improving life skills, Listeners, Helplines, etc. IIT Madras is continuously striving to ensure that our campus provides each student an environment filled with harmony and peace. The Institute hospital assists in providing access to sexual and reproductive health-care services. Women’s Forum also provides information and education services. https://womensforum.iitm.ac.in/
Doctors care available between 8am and 6pm in their cabins/casualty/wards for consultation and treatment. Most common health issues are treated and guided by the Institute doctors. Those requiring specialist medical care or expert opinion are referred to suitable specialists. Certain specialty doctors visit the hospital on specified days and time and appointments are fixed as per the requirement.
Inpatient:
Staff, Students requiring inpatient care are admitted in our wards in the hospital.
Pharmacy:
The Clinical pharmacy is outsourced to ‘Kauvery Pharmacy Pvt Ltd’ It is functions between 8am and 8 pm and all common medicines, injections are dispensed as per the Institute doctor’s prescription.
Clinical Laboratory:
It is outsourced to ‘Lister Metropolis Ltd’. The Lab is open 24*7 for emergency sample collection. Routine blood work up & non urgent samples will be collected between 7am and 7 pm.
Physiotherapy:
Physiotherapy services are available from 9am to 5.30 pm Monday to Friday and between 9am and 12.30 pm on Saturday. It is outsourced to ‘Indus Therapeuti’.
Facilities
- Medical Insurance: All Staff and students are covered in Medical Insurance which is renewed annually.
- Reimbursement: Institute reimburses Radiological investigations, consultation charges for those referred to specialty doctors, special procedures etc. on par with the CGHS rates. Medicines and Laboratory investigations are not reimbursed.
- Vaccination: Vaccination is done twice a month for both pediatric patients and adults. It is done on the second and fourth Wednesday.
- Camp: Health camps (Mammography, Women health, Medical disease etc.), Blood donation camps are conducted on a need basis. Annual health check-up for all employees above 40years of age is done.
Healthy Community
A) Health Education:
- First Aid classes and BLS classes are conducted for students and departments who request for the same.
- Awareness and appropriate safety measures to be taken in the event of certain diseases like Dengue, Typhoid etc.
- Importance of Physical activity and Lifestyle measures for Physical and Mental well-being is being stressed on a one on one basis.
- Nutritious and healthy balanced diet is important for maintaining general health and also prevents a lot of chronic diseases. Adequate hydration is also to be maintained both in healthy and diseased state.
B) Disease prevention:
Preventive measures at all levels a) Primary (those who are at risk), b) secondary (those who have the disease but no complications of it), c) Tertiary (those with complications to prevent worsening & disability)
C) Health Protection:
Aid in implementing certain rules or policies which protect the individual and the community (e.g., Avoid smoking in certain closed rooms etc, use of mask in certain conditions)
D) Psychological health:
Being in a stressful situation can lead to poor performance in academics and also deterioration in social life and lead to medical disorders. Counsellors (Hospital, Dean Student’s office, tele-counseling etc.) and various relaxing activities are available on campus to ensure that psychological issues are also addressed.
E) Sexual and Reproductive health:
- Staff and students who come to the hospital with specific complaints related to sexual or reproductive health are addressed on a one on one basis. Women students are encouraged to come for annual women’ health checkup when they are examined and their concerns are explained.
- Self Breast Examination: Monthly examination (at the end of Menstruation or on the first of every month for Post-menopausal women) is a must for all women, more so if there is a family history of Malignancy.
- Infections in the Genital tract: Both male & female can get infection which can be a simple fungal infection or serious bacterial or viral infection including HIV.
- Maintaining one’s physical health with good diet and exercise is important for normal menstrual cycle and reproductive health.
- Contraceptive measures prevent unwanted pregnancies. There are various methods available for both male and female which has to be discussed with the physician.
