National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), is India’s largest technical knowledge dissemination and certification program involving seven Indian Institutes of Technology. NPTEL is the largest successfully running multi institutional project in India. It is a not for profit consortium supported by the MoE, Govt of India.
This initiative was started with the aim of providing access to quality courses created by faculty of premier institutes to anyone who has an internet connection and a computer. With the advent of MOOC platforms, we organically evolved to offering certification exams and has grown on to become the technical agency managing the National MOOC platform - SWAYAM.
Courses in all major branches of engineering and physical sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels along with management, and humanities courses at the postgraduate level are now available to learn from, on the NPTEL website, without any cost. Several improvements such as indexing of all courses, keyword search, transcripts in PDF format and translated text in 11 Indian languages were implemented. https://nptel.ac.in/
From March 2014 onward NPTEL started offering online certification courses. Every January and July, anywhere between 700 to 800 courses are offered online - free of cost - for anyone to enroll and learn from. The certification involves writing an exam that is proctored and conducted in 200+ cities across India. Through an online portal, 4, 8, or 12 week online courses, typically on topics relevant to students in all years of higher education along with basic core courses in sciences and humanities with exposure to relevant tools and technologies, are being offered.
NPTEL was felicitated by the President of India on July 9, 2017 at the 'National Convention on Digital Initiatives for Higher Education' for its commendable contribution to digital initiatives. In 2022, NPTEL won Gold in the ‘Lifelong Learning category’ of the ‘Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards’ for providing opportunities for personal and professional development, including upskilling and re-skilling.
